چکیده

Intracranial pressure (ICP) is one of the most important parameters for evaluating intracranial conditons. The skulls of newborns and infants, unlike the tightly sutured skull of adults, provide non-invasive access for measurement of ICPs via the anterior fontanelle. A new transducer has been developed which is convenient for non-invasive, continuous measurement of intracranial pressure through the anterior fontanelle. The new transducer is thinner and lighter than the APT-16 type transducer (Hewlett-Packard). The principles of measurement of TOP with this new transducer, the results of basic experiments, and results obtained from clinical applications are deseribed in this report.

Methods of measuring intracranial pressure via the fontanelle without puncture.

It is suggested that non-invasive techniques for measuring intracranial pressure should be suitable for use in the unsedated infant and should be capable of measuring pressure continuously. Methods described by other authors are reviewed. After investigation of 18 patients the technique relying upon the pulsation of the fontanelle described by Purin was rejected as being difficult to perform an...

Non-invasive measurement of intracranial pressure in the newborn and the infant: the Rotterdam teletransducer.

Knowledge of intracranial pressure may be important in many clinical situations in neonates and young infants. The best way to obtain this information would be a non-traumatic procedure. In order to test the reliability of a new fontanometer, the Rotterdam teletransducer, 25 simultaneous measurements of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) pressure and anterior fontanelle pressure (AFP) were performed. Me...

Awake intubation increases intracranial pressure without affecting cerebral blood flow velocity in infants.

Tracheal intubation is frequently required in neonatal anaesthetic practice. Awake intubation is one method of securing the airway and in certain circumstances, for many anaesthetists, can be preferable to intubation following induction of anaesthesia. Previous studies have inferred that the elevation in anterior fontanelle pressure observed during tracheal intubation in neonates was caused by ...

Giant intracranial lipoma.

Intracranial lipomas are rare and usually benign in their course. We report a case of a giant intracranial lipoma presenting with raised intracranial pressure. Additionally, this patient was found to have a large lipoma of the anterior fontanelle. The clinical course and outcome of this patient is presented and relevant literature reviewed.

New fontanometer for continuous estimation of intracranial pressure in the newborn.

Intracranial pressure was estimated by a new pneumatic applanation fontanometer in babies in intensive care. A close correlation with cerebrospinal fluid pressure was found on 35 separate occasions. In 12 control babies the mean (SD) fontanelle pressure was 5.2 (2.2) cm H2O, in eight with a hypoxic-ischaemic encephalopathy it was 12.6 (4.3) cm H2O, and in nine with post-haemorrhagic hydrocephal...
